Saul Bass
Saul Bass, born in 1920, is famous for his film poster designs, film title sequences and credits, and for branding "a staggering array of major corporations (such as AT&T and Kleenex) with his iconic, minimal designs" (99designs.com,1). Bass fell in love with drawing as a child and later ended up taking "night classes at the Art Students League where he had the fortune of studying under György Kepes, a master of the functional Bauhaus aesthetic" (99designs.com,4). His post-college life consisted of work in advertising until his film poster, Carmen Jones, caught the attention of big-name filmmakers who hired him for his impressive skills. One of his famous title sequence designs can be seen in North by Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock. The title sequence portrayed "his signature "kinetic type," where letters dashed and moved across the screen and frequently incorporated images other than text" (99designs.com,7). An example of his credit designs can be seen in Goodfellas, directed by Martin Scorsese.

MARGARET CALVERT

Margaret is a british typographer and graphic designer. She worked with Jock Kinnier and created most of the road signs to this day in the United Kingdom. She also created the transporting font on road signs, the rail alphabet font used on the British railway systems, and early version of signs that used to be used at the airports. She was born in South Africa in 1936 and moved to England in 1950. Here she attended Chelsea College of Art and meet Kinnier who used to tutor her. They chose the black on yellow scheme for the signs after researching the most effective combination.

JORDAN CORDONE - 4 STAMP - FREDDIE MERCURY

Roberto Baldazzini - Jordan Cordone

Hi everyone,

Roberto Baldazzini is a Italian illustrator and comic artist, he specializes in black and white and full color erotic comic books. The 2 big projects he's worked on and well known for is the "Casa HowHard" & "Bayba: The 110 BJ's". The story of the Casa HowHard is about an apartment building and all the residents are transsexual. All of the characters in this comic have a womanly face, breasts, but have male genitals. This comic is supposed to give you a simple and silly vibe. The characters give off a "guiltiness innocence". This comic has a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th sequel. On the other hand his comic "Bayba" is about a a nymphomaniac transsexual sexual slave who lives to please men. I read that this women will, "transforms herself from a slender youth with a boyish figure into a well-endowed, womanly transsexual by applying a high-tech hormonal crème to her chest and then sets out on a self-imposed mission to satisfy as many men as she can by any means possible". Roberto has many more work, but these 2 stick out the most. HIs comics are very different, but they are created for people who either like that sense of humor, or anyone who enjoys these story lines.

What is due this week?

Students in my day class work on 2 stamp projects... the one we do together as a learning exercise and one that you create on your own.  Change up the design, the theme, etc.  Also make it a block of 4.  Visit the USPS store to see all of the stamps issued last year for some ideas.

This is a chance to tweak any issues with the first stamp and re submit it.

Keep going... and have fun. :)

Chip Kidd- Master of Graphic Design- Matthew Jablon

Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer, author and editor. He is best recognized as a graphic designer for book covers. Born in Pennsylvania, in 1964, Chip Kidd began working for a publishing company in 1986. He would also freelance for various companies and produced more than 70 book jackets a year. Kidd has worked with many great authors, such as Dean Koontz, Frank Miller, Mark Beyer and Bret Easton Ellis. The USA Today called him "the closest thing to a rock star" in the graphic design industry. While he is considered one of the best in the world, Kidd is humble and often says that he has made his career on the back of great authors. Kidd not only creates cover art for novels, but also for comic books and graphic novels. After researching Kidd, I noticed that I am more familiar with his work than I realized. He did the cover art for the film adaptation of the Jurassic Park novel, which was one of the first novels I owned as a child. He also did the cover art for comics such as Batman, and the graphic novel the Watchmen. -Matthew

Hi everyone,

This week I chose to write about Harry Beck, he was a English Electrical Designer & artist. He created the London Underground Tube Map in 1931 which is a public rapid transit system for London region, England a few more places. The map had all on the tracks, station and services. He was known for the tube map, but did have other works he accomplished. He also created a rail map of the underground systems that did not get published while he was alive but many years later i 1994 it was published for the first time. Going forward, Beck produced many maps of mainlines and underground lines for many regions, such as British railways,  Paris metro, and more. Harry Becks maps are shown in the London Transport Museum to this day.

Thank you,

Jordan Cordone

I have used Photoshop a little in the past and am excited to gain more experience with it during this course. I look forward to working with all of you. -Matthew

Question from Jessica

Hi,
I just wanted to confirm that we are not required to download photoshop as long as we use the computers on campus. Also, I've never taken a course in a Mod before. I'm not quite sure what that entails. Do we meet as a class? Is it entirely online?

Hi Jessica,

Thanks for writing and asking!  I want you to get started on the best possible foot.  If you work on campus, then you don't need Photoshop on your computer... The class is entirely online and happens in 8 weeks... but I am on campus 4 days/week, Mon-Thurs to help you when you need it.... if you need it.  The class runs from the syllabus and the videos linked from it...  Images and short Graphic Designer reviews are posted to the class blog each week. I take attendance from the posts, each Monday morning.

The course has the same content as the day class and the same projects... it's just that you have the luxury (and responsibility) of independent work...

Hope that helps...

Can I post your Q and my response to the blog as others may have the same thoughts...???

All the best,

Prof. Nevins

Thank you so much for your help! You can most certainly post my question.

Bio- Jordan Cordone

Hi everyone,

My name is Jordan Cordone, senior at Albertus. I started at Albertus in the undergrad program, taking classes at Albertus during the day for 2 years, I was the VP of Communications in SAA, played lacrosse and was a commuter. With my work schedule I was forced to transfer to the DL program so that I was able to work and continue the long hours I needed to complete at work, unfortunately it prolonged my schooling 1 1/2 years but I am happy to say I will graduate in December of 2020. I am majoring in Business management in hopes of owning my own Italian restaurant within the next 2 years. my connection to Graphic design is, going back to high school I worked for my schools graphic design business, creating business cards, invitations, and much much more. I figured because I have some experience why not try to refresh my memory and hopefully learn more.

Thanks for reading,

Jordan Cordone

John Alvin

I chose to research a graphic designer from Massachusettes called John Alvin, who specialized in cinematic artwork and poster creation. He designed movie posters for over 130 films, including E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, The Lion King, and Lord of the Rings. As a young boy, Alvin’s interest in graphic design sprung from his attraction to movie advertisements in the newspaper. He later went on to earn a graduate degree in 1971 “from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, and soon after took up a job as a freelance artist” (famousgraphicdesigners.org,2). It wasn’t until a peer of his invited him to collaborate on a movie campaign for Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles, that Alvin began to work on creating unique film posters. Other filmmakers soon began to notice Alvin’s work and his popularity grew. He ended up working with “some of the most prestigious film studios in Hollywood, such as Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Entertainment, and New Line Cinema” (famousgraphicdesigners.org,5). The reason I chose to research John Alvin is because he is the graphic designer behind the posters of many of my favorite films, and some of the most popular films of our time. His eye-catching, unique designs most certainly aided in the marketing-success of these movie campaigns.

Welcome to Graphic Design I

Class begins Monday, Jan 13th and runs 8 weeks until March 7th.  The main thing to do this week is to get all of the systems up and running.

-Read through the class syllabus linked from the list of links in the upper right of the blog.

-Post a bio and hello to this blog.  Include a statement of what you hope to learn in this class. A selfie would be great if you can manage it too.

-Download and install Photoshop.  The link to do that is on the upper right hand side of the blog. Use you Albertus credentials when asked.

By the end of Week 1, I want you to:

-Post a 1 paragraph review of a graphic design artist found either at the Museum of Graphic Design or through one of the links on the syllabus.  Include an image from their work.  This will count as 1 attendance record and your Bio will count as the other for the first week.  After that, your creative work that you'll post will count toward attendance.  There are two attendance records generated each week.

-Watch some of the videos on how to use Photoshop, posted in the syllabus.

-Be sure to check the syllabus each week.  It is your roadmap to the work ahead.  I encourage you to redo projects at anytime as there are no strict deadlines on each project. The main thing is to post each week so that I can take attendance.  I do take attendance on Monday morning, giving you the week-end to wrap everything up.

-Let me know if you have any concerns or if you don't know how to do something.  There is a video on how to post to this blog in the list of class links in the upper right hand corner where other important links are located.

-Getting off the ground this week is very important!  The class goes by quickly.  Any delay in learning to blog, installing your software, etc will set you back quite a bit.  There are thousands of tutorials on YouTube on Photoshop as well as the videos I have made for you, linked from the syllabus.

Looking forward to getting this class launched!
