MARGARET CALVERT
Margaret is a british typographer and graphic designer. She worked with Jock Kinnier and created most of the road signs to this day in the United Kingdom. She also created the transporting font on road signs, the rail alphabet font used on the British railway systems, and early version of signs that used to be used at the airports. She was born in South Africa in 1936 and moved to England in 1950. Here she attended Chelsea College of Art and meet Kinnier who used to tutor her. They chose the black on yellow scheme for the signs after researching the most effective combination.
Great choice... notice the use of a Helvetica style font which has become ubiquitous in public signage all over the world.
