Graphic designer #8 Louise Fili / Crystal

Louise Fili
I have chosen to write about the Italian American graphic design artist Louise Fili. Louise Fili was born in New Jersey, and she was interested in graphic design very early in her life. Even as a child she carved letterforms into book covers, and she was able to teach herself calligraphy using a speedball guide. She then went on to attend Skidmore College in New York to study art. She received a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art. After college she did freelance designing on special book project, and at the age of 25 she became senior designer for Herb Lubalin. This was when she learned that type was a very expressive tool, which is why she began using it more. In 1989 she opened her own studio, which specialized in the design of restaurant identity, food related logos, and packaging.

Susan Kare
Susan Kare is a graphic designer who was born February 5th, 1954. In her early life she was introduced to typography and graphic design by the museum owner who she worked for. She then went on to graduate with a Bachelors in art from Mount Holyoke College. She even went on to get a PHD at New York University. After college she moved to San Fransisco and received a job at a museum. She would then go on to get a call from a high school friend about working for Apple, and she then became a member of the original macintosh team which is an amazing feat as she is the designer of many typefaces, icons, and original marketing materials for the original macintosh operating system. Graphic designer #6 kate moross / Crystal

Kate Moross
I decided to pick Kate Moross and the reason was that she is a more recent female graphic designer. Kate Moross is a graphic designer, illustrator, and art designer who was born in London in 1986. She is recognized for her typographic illustrations. At the young age of only 26 she was able to achieve a good amount in her career, she is now the current art director of Studio Moross. Usually her designs follow a certain pattern that involves a good amount of 3 sided shapes, illegible typography, and she also has love for freeform lettering. She went on to go to college after highschool at Camberwell University of The Arts where she received a Bachelor's degree in Art. One achievement she has, while studying she opened her own record label called Isomorph Records, and the goal was to examine the dynamic between music and design.

Graphic designer #5 Chip kidd / Crystal

Chip Kidd
The graphic designer that I have chosen today is Chip Kidd. Chip Kidd is an American graphic designer who was born in Pennsylvania in 1964. Chip Kidd has become one of the most famous book cover designers known to us by now. Chip grew up interested and influenced by American popular culture, and comic books was his beginning into the graphic design world. Chip went on to attend and graduate from Pennsylvania State University, and he received a Bachelors in graphic design. In Chips career he has been a graphic designer, book designer, editor, author, lecturer, and a musician. One thing you will notice about him is that he never uses the same signature he claims that a single signature looks stale. Chip is currently associate art director at Knopf which is an imprint of Random House. He started there as a junior assistant and worked his way up. His first novel was called “The Cheese Monkeys”. This was a satire about college art students who struggle to meet the demands of an evil graphic design instructor. This went on to be very well received and people loved it.

Graphic designer #4 David carson/ Crystal

David Carson
The graphic designer I chose to write about today is David Carson. David Carson was born September 8th 1955, he is known mostly for his innovate magazine design, and he is also well known for his use of typography. For example, he was the artistic director for a magazine called “Ray Gun” he was then able to use the style of typographic, and if we’re being honest he is very well known for the typography era as they call it.  Carson did complete a bachelor degree at the University of Arizona he received a Bachelor’s of arts in sociology. His first time coming in contact with graphic design was a two weeks graphics course at the university this went on to shape his future in this industry. After he graduated college Carson started to experiment with graphic design in ways he had not previously. He was immersed in the artistic culture of Southern California, and he then attended the Oregon College of Commercial Art for a couple months. Then he took an unpaid internship with Action Now Magazine. Then he traveled to Switzerland to take a 3 week workshop in graphic design he then met his teacher Hans Rudolf Lutz, and this was his first influence to take this seriously.
