Dolly Rudeman

Dolly Rudeman was a Dutch graphic designer from the Netherlands, who was famous for her poster designs. She lived from 1902 - 1980. Rudeman attended the Hague Drawing Institute after spending two years in high school. She then went on to earn a teaching certificate in drawing from the Hague Royal Academy of Art. She spent the 1920s and 1930s designing film and art posters in France and Holland. Rudeman designed posters for a few famous movie stars and directors such as Charlie Chaplin and Sergei Eisenstein. Her most famous poster is entitled "Vicious Cossack," and was designed for Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. 7,500 copies were printed! Not only did Rudeman design posters, but she wrote children's books as well. In the 1940s, Rudeman "moved to Amsterdam and continued making art and writing children's books" (Moonkitten,2). A fun fact about Dolly Rudeman is that she had a book written about her by a man named Paul Bastien Annick. The book was called Pioneer of the Dutch Film Poster Dolly Rudeman 1902 - 1980. It discusses her career as "the only woman designing posters for the film industry in the twenties" (Wiki,2). Unfortunately, Rudeman's work after World War II was not as famous as her work before the war.

Master Graphic Designer- Paul Rand- Matthew Jablon

Paul Rand (1914-1996)

Born Peretz Rosenbaum in Brooklyn, New York, embraced design at a very young age. He painted signs for his fathers store as well as for events at his school. He was largely self taught because his father did not believe that a career in art would provide Rand with a sufficient income. Rand was one of the first American commercial artists to embrace and practice the Swiss Style of graphic design. He learned about the works of Cassandre and Moholy-Nagy from European magazines such as Gebrauchsgraphik. Rand is best known for his corporate logo designs. He designed logos for IBM, UPS, Enron, Morningstar, Westinghouse, ABC, and more. Many of his logos are still used today. Rand was also a professor emeritus of graphic design at Yale University from 1956-1969 and from 1974-1985. In 1972, Rand was inducted to the New York Art Directors Club Hall of Fame. Many of his logos may be interpreted as simplistic, but Rand believed that "ideas do not need to be esoteric to be original or exciting."

Storm Thorgerson

Storm Thorgerson is a British graphic designer whom many say was part of the Surrealism movement. He worked with album covers, book covers, posters, graphics, logos, and music videos. Storm graduated from Leicester with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and English and later graduated from the Royal College of Art with a Master's degree in Television and Film Production. "One of his first major works was the cover of Pink Floyd's A Saucerful of Secrets album. Thorgerson created a lively collage featuring comic book pages and swirling planetary systems. He went on to design most of the album covers for the band" (artnet.com,2). His album cover designs were well-liked; Storm designed various album covers for bands such as Styx, Genesis, Ween, and more. His Master's degree allowed Storm to create music videos as well. His most recent work as a director can be seen in Pink Floyd's High Hopes. Not only has he worked with graphic design, but he has also written a few books about cover art for albums! Storm Thorgerson was truly a man of many talents.

Jessica Walsh

"Jessica Walsh is a 33-year-old, American graphic designer, art director and illustrator, and founder of Creative Agency and Walsh" (peoplepill.com,1). She was born on October 30, 1986, in New York, but raised in Connecticut. As a young girl, Walsh became interested in website design and coding, and as a result of her interest, she later decided to pursue a degree in graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design. Post-graduation, Walsh was lucky enough to intern at a design firm known as Pentagram, and learn the tricks of the trade with her mentor, Paula Scher. After a year of interning with Pentagram, Walsh found work at Print Magazine. As the associate art director, she "had design work and illustrations featured in various books, magazines, newspapers (including the New York Times and New York Times Magazine)" (peoplepill.com,3). Working at Print Magazine, Jessica Walsh discovered her own personal style and claims working at the magazine was one of her very best experiences.

Walsh's work consists of "branding, typography, website design, and art installations. Her signature style has been described as "bold, emotional, and provocative" with the occasional surrealistic flourish, and her art has been said to look "hand-made and at times quite darling" (Peoplepill.com,5). A couple of her clients include Adobe and Colab Eyewear and Levi's. Her ultimate dream was to run her own business, and thus, the creative studio "& Walsh" was born. One fun fact about Jessica Walsh is that she created "Ladies, Wine, and Design." This organization was meant to encourage women to work together. In a time when women are often competing against one another, "Ladies, Wine, and Design" is like a breath of fresh air.

Jessica Walsh has received awards such as New Star of Design, Computer Arts, 2010, Society of Publication Designers Award, 2010, New Visual Artist Award, Print Magazine, 2011, Type Directors Club Award, Les Arts Decoratifs poster, 2012, People to Watch, GD USA, 2013,  and Webby Award, Best Home/Welcome Page, Sagmeister & Walsh, 2014.

Master Graphic Designer- Storm Thorgerson

Storm Thorgerson (1944-2013) is a master graphic designer, who is widely regarded for his album cover art. Thorgerson went to school with members of the band Pink Floyd and was friends with members of the band throughout his life. Perhaps Thorgerson's most well known work is the album covers he designed for Pink Floyd, especially their 1973 album, the Dark Side of the Moon. Other bands Thorgeson has designed album covers for include, AC/DC, the Police, Genesis, Paul McCartney, and many more. Thorgeson enjoyed working with photography, because he liked to play with reality. He once said this, "I like photography because it is a reality medium, unlike drawing which is unreal. I like to mess with reality ... to bend reality. Some of my works beg the question [sic] of is it real or not?." In 2013, Prog Magazine renamed its Grand Design Award after Thorgerson. It is now known as the Storm Thorgerson Grand Design Award and will be given to the designer of the year's best-packaged product.

Pilar Zeta

Pilar Zeta is an Argentinian graphic designer, artist, and fashion designer who became famous for her surrealist album covers. Her work is characterized as "big, striking shapes, punctuated with a dash of the unexpected" (Wiki,9).  She began to draw and paint at the age of six and frequently visited museums with her family, which fueled her love for design. In the early 2000s, Zeta moved to the United States and began working as a graphic designer, even though she had not continued her education in secondary school. In 2013, "Zeta began designing her own fashion lines. In August 2014, she debuted her collaborative fashion line Holographic Universe. According to Zeta's website, "the fashion and lifestyle brand was influenced by their fascination with the cosmos, neo-classical sculpture, and time travel." Zeta created the artwork while designing the fashion pieces. By late summer of 2014, the line had been exhibited in Paris, New York" (Wiki,7). Later, she dabbled in directing and "manifested her aesthetic in numerous mediums such as music videos, album artwork, set design, and live performances" (pilarzeta.com). The biggest reason she caught my attention was because of the famous artists she has worked with. Her website states that she "has collaborated with artists such as Coldplay, Miguel, and Katy Perry!" The work below portrays her work for Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream." Her artwork is unique and bold, and I personally like how she is able to use her style in so many different mediums!

Louise Fili

Louise Fili is a graphic designer and writer who graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs. Here, she found a love for typography while working in the type shop. I felt it was quite fitting to research this artist because we are currently learning about typography. "Fili specializes in logo, package, restaurant, type, book, and book jacket design" (Hewitt,1). She eventually founded Louise Fili Ltd where she works as principal. She has created more than 2,000 book covers and even co-authored design books! Today, her work can be found "in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Musee des Arts Decoratifs. Her work has also been featured in Graphis, Step Inside Design, and print magazines" (Hewitt,4).
