Dolly Rudeman

Dolly Rudeman was a Dutch graphic designer from the Netherlands, who was famous for her poster designs. She lived from 1902 - 1980. Rudeman attended the Hague Drawing Institute after spending two years in high school. She then went on to earn a teaching certificate in drawing from the Hague Royal Academy of Art. She spent the 1920s and 1930s designing film and art posters in France and Holland. Rudeman designed posters for a few famous movie stars and directors such as Charlie Chaplin and Sergei Eisenstein. Her most famous poster is entitled "Vicious Cossack," and was designed for Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin. 7,500 copies were printed! Not only did Rudeman design posters, but she wrote children's books as well. In the 1940s, Rudeman "moved to Amsterdam and continued making art and writing children's books" (Moonkitten,2). A fun fact about Dolly Rudeman is that she had a book written about her by a man named Paul Bastien Annick. The book was called Pioneer of the Dutch Film Poster Dolly Rudeman 1902 - 1980. It discusses her career as "the only woman designing posters for the film industry in the twenties" (Wiki,2). Unfortunately, Rudeman's work after World War II was not as famous as her work before the war.
